Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a young girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server.
